Classical Books

There are so many great books!  I am unable to list them all on this blog.  Yet, many dedicated people have already done so.  Here is a list of great sites to find Classical and Living Books.

These read alouds are for your younger kids but the older ones may love them so much that they will want to read at story time!

Look to the column on the left.  There are book lists by age.  This is another curriculum guide.  Take a look at the living book suggestions for each section.  Scroll down to the end to find the fictional book lists.  Very nice lists!  I use this a lot.  The funny thing is that I notice as time went on I knew which books I wanted to read or have my children read.  Most of the time they are on the list!  Sweet!

A good starter list.

What is a Living Book?  The website www.simplycharlottemason.com as a great definition.

Living Books

Probably the most well known of Charlotte’s methods is her use of living books instead of dry, factual textbooks. Living books are usually written by one person who has a passion for the subject and writes in conversational or narrative style. The books pull you into the subject and involve your emotions, so it’s easy to remember the events and facts. Living books make the subject “come alive.”

There isn't really a list of Living Books.  I have no problem finding a Living Book at the library.  Some ideas are biographies or autobiographies.  John James Audubon books for bird studies.  For a Christian world view on science the website http://www.answersingenesis.org/ has great resources.  Check out your church's library or go to the library of a larger church if yours is small like mine.  Over time it will be second nature what a Living Book is and you will be surprised how many are still available!
